DSN MOVIE TRANSCRIPT

The following is a transcript of the DSN movie:

The ability to communicate effectively can be the difference between success and failure in all types of military operations. The Defense Switched Network is a primary information transfer network for the Defense Information System Network and provides the Department of Defense effective information sharing capability critical to the success of the warfighter.

DISA provides the DSN at the direction of the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. In accordance with established policy, the DSN is the official DoD switched service between military bases and is the preferred communication for Command and Control users. The distinct combination of providing end-to-end global connectivity while remaining restricted to only DoD users makes the DSN stand apart from various other networks.

Although the DSN is designed primarily for non-secure communications, network security is provided by restricting access and through bulk encryption, while the true end-to-end security is provided as required by specific terminal devices such as the Secure Terminal Equipment.

Flexibility is another of the DSN's benefits, as it offers the equivalent to commercial networks' toll-free 1-800 service and a connection for mobile users to access the DSN network. Toll-free service can be requested and currently, area code 510 is used for this type of service.

Enhanced Mobile Satellite Services is a secure government mobile service using satellites to access the DSN network at a specific ground station. Once access has been attained, the DSN network can extend an EMSS call to a DSN phone, or a DSN user can contact a remote EMSS user regardless of location.

The DSN's Multi-Level Precedence Preemption capability ensures that the highest priority calls go through. DSN phones receive precedence calls which are assigned one of five precedence levels: Flash Override, Flash, Immediate, Priority, and Routine. There are no longer any additional per-minute charges for precedence calls, just a fee for the capability. The MLPP capability was designed to meet military-unique requirements while ensuring access, transport, and egress for voice service when damage or a crisis occurs.

As the United States responded to Sept. 11th by declaring war on terrorism though Operation Enduring Freedom, the DSN network to Southwest Asia dramatically increased in both size and robustness. Despite the huge increase in demand for services to support Operation Enduring Freedom, the DSN has experienced no problems with completing precedence calls and improving the service to our forward-deployed warfighters.

The DSN network offers switched digital service at either 56 or 64 kbps. Graphics, video, and higher speed data polls can now be transmitted in secure and non-secure mode, anywhere in the world, many times at the current transmission rate. This application is especially suited to support tactical operations for the warfighter, telemedicine, and the intelligence agencies.

The DSN also uses switched digital service to support dial-up secure and non-secure video, teleconferencing for users, and desktop and conference room environments. The video phone can be increased by bonding additional channels together to increase bandwidth in increments of 56 or 64 kbps in order to ensure interoperability.

Information on usage-sensitive billing and the rate tables for routine business day charges are located in the DISA DWCF CISA annual Rate Letter which can be viewed from the DITCO Web site. Once the webpage has loaded, look under Inventory and Billing in the left-hand menu and select "Billing Prices" to view the Adobe Acrobat file (.pdf) for thet current year.
